Imagine a world where electric SUVs are not just a trend but a reality that’s shaping the future of driving. Recently, the prototype for Volkswagen's newest and most affordable electric SUV, the ID. Cross, has made waves by being spotted in public with barely any disguise. This revelation is stirring excitement among automotive enthusiasts and eco-conscious drivers alike.
Just moments ago, keen-eyed spy photographers managed to capture this nearly undisguised version of the ID. Cross cruising around, complete with a VW badge prominently displayed. The striking design of this vehicle is unmistakable, yet it's clear that Volkswagen wants to create an impression that it might not be an electric vehicle at all.
Gone are the days of heavy camouflage that obscured the SUV’s true form. Instead, VW has employed some clever visual tricks, using silver and black tape across the grille, lights, and bumpers to mimic an older gas-powered model. However, this tactic falls short, as it’s evident under the tape that the ID. Cross retains the distinctive contours showcased in the concept model unveiled at the Munich auto show just a few months back.
While the production doors of the ID. Cross are now visible, VW still attempts to obscure certain features, such as the black lower plastic trim, which is covered with body-colored tape. The C pillar styling remains partially hidden as well, cleverly concealing the playful design elements reminiscent of the ID. Buzz.
From a design perspective, the ID. Cross stays true to its concept. Its bold nose, compact overhangs, and neatly tucked tail align closely with the original design, panel by panel. Even the light graphics are discernible through the tape, clearly echoing the new family face that VW is introducing across its lineup.
As for the interior, while recent images don’t reveal much, we can anticipate that it will mirror the advanced features presented at the Munich event. Expect an 11-inch freestanding digital gauge cluster positioned just in front of the steering wheel, accompanied by a larger 13-inch tablet touchscreen above the console, boasting AI assistance powered by ChatGPT.
Underneath, the ID. Cross shares its versatile MEB platform with the upcoming ID. Polo. The concept version is equipped with a robust 208 horsepower front-mounted motor, making it the most powerful option among the three powertrains confirmed for the new Polo.
What if there’s a high-performance variant on the horizon? The idea of an ID. Cross GTI isn’t far-fetched, especially since VW plans to introduce a more potent 223 horsepower motor for the Polo, potentially paving the way for the first electric hot hatch from the brand.
Although VW hasn’t disclosed specific battery sizes for the concept, they did mention an impressive range of 261 miles (420 km). This aligns with the 280-mile (450 km) range projected for the lighter, more aerodynamic ID. Polo equipped with a 52 kWh battery. While the Polo will also offer a smaller 37 kWh battery option, it remains uncertain if this will be available for the SUV when it officially launches in 2026.
