A $3.4 million roundabout in Midcoast Maine has become a source of controversy and humor among locals. This expensive project, funded by taxpayers, was intended to enhance safety at a notorious crash site in Damariscotta. However, the outcome has left many drivers feeling less than impressed.
The joke going around is that hiring a state traffic engineer can sometimes lead to a worse situation than the original problem. Despite the criticism, the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) proudly announced the completion of the roundabout on their Facebook page, celebrating the "final touches" with enthusiasm.
MDOT officials claimed that the intersection on Route 1 was previously a high-crash location. But locals on a Facebook group called "What's New In Waldoboro" are having a field day mocking the new traffic rotary. They report numerous close calls and even shared a photo of a truck rollover at the roundabout.
"The $3.4 million roundabout is off to a rocky start," said Kenny Ames, who posted the rollover photo. Ames called the project a waste of money, and others joined in with sarcastic comments.
But here's where it gets controversial: the MDOT has a different story to tell. They emphasize the "improved sight lines" designed to enhance safety. According to their narrative, taller evergreens in the middle block distant traffic, while shorter plantings towards the outside provide a better line of sight and will even bloom seasonally.
However, some locals like Jeremy Gourde disagree. He believes the curve is too sharp and predicts that drivers will be "launching over the center." He prefers the old intersection over the new roundabout, calling it dangerous.
