Border patrol chief Gregory Bovino faced a reprimand for falsely claiming that shots were fired at immigration officers in Chicago. This incident comes on the heels of Bovino's previous lies about being struck by a rock during a confrontation with protesters, which a federal judge had already addressed. Bovino, a frequent Fox News guest and face of Trump's mass deportation efforts, initially reported on social media that his agents had been subjected to various assaults, including being shot at, vehicular assaults, physical assaults, impeding, and violent mobs, for several hours. However, the Department of Homeland Security's statement revealed that an unknown male in a black Jeep fired shots at agents and fled, with no signs of gunfire found at the scene by the Chicago Police Department. Bovino's claims have been questioned, especially after a US district judge, Sara Ellis, exposed his earlier falsehoods about throwing tear gas at protesters without warning. This is not the first time Bovino has faced scrutiny for making false and misleading statements, as evidenced by his previous false claims about a US citizen being charged with assaulting an officer and an immigration sweep with no criminal records among those detained.
